Resolved to Live in Christ

Recently I traveled to the beach with a lifelong friend to scatter her spouse’s ashes there after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She had placed some of his remains in individual containers so that each person present could scatter some of the ashes.  As I stood praying and looking at the ashes in my hand, they barely looked different from the miles and miles of sand on the beach.  My mind was flooded with so many verses—that man was formed from the dust, that we are earthen vessels, clay jars, and that our lives are but a vapor.  I was struck by just how fleeting and seemingly insignificant our bodies, our “earth suits” really are.  We spend so much of our time and resources on earth working hard to take care of our bodies so that we can delay bodily death as long as possible.  And while we should absolutely be good stewards of our bodies—the temple of His Holy Spirit—do we make anywhere close to the same effort to care for our spirits, the part of who we are that is alive for all eternity? There is really only one New Year’s resolution that lasts--to resolve to know nothing except Jesus Christ and him crucified (1 Cor. 2:2). Will you resolve this year to take your daily spiritual vitamins—His Word, prayer, worship, and fellowship? Will you exercise faith and trust in God with reckless abandon? Will you go before the Great Physician for your annual spiritual check-up?  May each one of us resolve in our hearts today to invest in the part of us that lives with the Lord now and forever!

Student Recital Celebration

"It's amazing that my focus and gifts are no longer about what I want to do for God. It's understanding that this is a privilege, as a child of God, and He thought enough of me to plant those gifts and strengths in me so I could be apart His ministry" - Cassandra Sims

We had such a blessed time celebrating our Fall 2015 semester with musical performances and personal testimonies from our own ACMin students. Cassandra, a 1st year ACMin student through our partnership with Timothy Baptist Church, shared her testimony about the "Talents and Spiritual Gifts" course she took this Fall semester. What a faith-building time!

Faculty Spotlight: Lee Arney

Lee Arney, a new faculty member here at ACMin this Spring, moved to Athens in 2010 with his wife of 28 years, Margie. Though family initially drew them to the area, children and grandchildren have since moved away, leaving Lee to wonder how God would have him invest here in Athens.

Lee grew up in church and accepted the Lord as a young person but admits that the world crept in and drew him away. "I was a motorhead," said Lee. "I was really into dragracing, and just let the Lord slip out of my life. I caused a lot of damage."

In his 20s while attending a church service, Lee's rebellion came to an end. "The Pastor extended the altar call FOREVER," said Lee. "I still remember, he read from Proverbs, 'A man who hardens his neck after much reproof will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.'"

"But He restores it all," Lee said, remembering God's faithfulness throughout his life. Lee thanks God for his "praying mom and family, and relentless Baptist friends" who witnessed to him.

Faith restored, Lee soon found his passion in studying God's Word, but ran into a dilemma. "I would get to a hard passage of Scripture and go to five different Pastors - and get five different answers."

Lee began attending Bible college in Missouri, but felt convicted to move back to Ohio to be near his daughters. Still hungry for more spiritual understanding, Lee continued to seek the Lord for opportunities. During correspondance with Malone University, God miraculously provided a position for Lee in his line of work as a mechanic - at the University! After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Malone, Lee went on to earn his Master's Degree at Ashlyn Theological Seminary.

As a newcomer to Athens, Lee would drive by the ACMin campus and wonder if this was how God would use his gifting. "I've always loved to teach," said Lee, his voice lightening as he tells a story about a man in his Sunday school class who decided that he would apply Jesus' compassion and fearlessness to his own life. " When people learn something they can use in real life - it's really amazing."

Lee will be teaching Church History at ACMin this Spring semester on Mondays & Wednesdays from 9:00am - 10:30am (Click here to learn more about registering for Spring courses). We can't wait to have Lee in the classroom.

Lee and Margie are loving Athens, but they still spend as much time as possible with their children and grandchildren scattered across the United States.
